Learning ZBrush UV Master

In This Blog, I'm going to go over ZBrush's UV Master plugin. The Plugin will automatically generate 2D UVs based on the ZBrush 3D model's geometry. UVs for a 3D mesh involve unwrapping the 3D mesh at the seams to a 2D plane. Normally making UVs can be a time-consuming proses but With the ZBrush's UV Master plugin, a 3D mesh can have UVs within just a couple clicks.

UV Master Tutorial

Step- 1 when using The UV Master plugin is to set the model subdivision count to the lowest setting

Step- 2 is to navigate to Zplugin and click on UV master

Step- 3 leave all the settings at default and click

After clicking Unwrap and waiting for ZBrush to load the model should have UVs. To see the model's UVs navigate to UV Map then click on the Morph UV button to view its UVs.

UV Master Important Tools

Flatten- Allows you to view your UV maps. Uflatten brings you back to the 3D view.

CheckSeams- Allows you to view the seams of your mesh indicated in orange

UV Master Control painting

UV Master is a great tool but with some complex geometry can create some not-so-clean UVs. This is where control painting comes into effect. Control painting is a tool that allows you to somewhat control the seams of the model. Once enabled, Contol Painting select Protect, Attract, or Erase.

  • Protect allows you to paint out areas of a mesh that you do not want to be affected by seams.
(RED)

  • Attract allows you to paint areas where you want the seams to be attracted.
(BLUE)

  • Erase allows you to erase either color

Controle Painting has one more feature the Subtract from ambient occlusion button. This button puts seams in the areas of a model that would be hidden by shadows in crevices or creases.

UV Master Other Tools

  • Density sider- Allows you to change the texture density
  • Copy and past UV- allows you to copy and past UVs
  • Work on Clone- clones the model

My thoughts

When going into the research UV Master I thought it was going to be difficult to learn all of its features. Little did I know that all of ZBrushes UV Master is pretty streamlined and easy to learn. most of the information I found on the ZBrush website and there are lots of YouTube videos on how to use Control Painting. I have had no difficulties using the UV Masters tools and I have had a lot of fun researching this topic. I think UV Master is a Great tool but it is nowhere close to making UVs as good as making them by hand. It all comes down to what you need the UVs for and when you find it appropriate to use.
